Here at FHPC, we value the place the offertory/giving has in the service each Sunday morning. We value it because we understand the offertory to include but also be so much more than just about giving money. We are truly a blessed people and are living testimonies to the fulfillment of God’s covenant with Abraham in Genesis 12.
12:1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Through Abraham, all the families of the earth have indeed been blessed. Blessed how? Blessed with the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. But we have not been blessed so we can horde it like human piggy banks. We have been blessed, “so that you will be a blessing.”
Each week as the offering plates are passed, we are reminded that we have been blessed so that we will be a blessing. A blessing to others through our gifts, our talents, out time, and our service. We believe the Scriptures to be true when they say, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
So, we say all that to say this. Please feel free to use online giving as a tool of financial management, simplification, and consistency, but please also remember to pause a moment as the plate is passed each week and commit your whole self to the Lord even as you have committed these financial funds.
